Europe Biotech Industry Cites Butterfly Buffer Zone Study in Seeking GM Corn Approval

The European biotechnology industry called on the European Commission to expedite the approval or re-approval of three genetically modified corn crops for cultivation after risk mitigation analysis indicated that current buffer zones to protect butterflies and moths against the spread of GM corn pollen are sufficient. The updated European Food Safety Authority risk management advice, issued after it reviewed the conclusions of a 10-year study on GM corn field trials in Belgium, Germany and Switzerland, stated that buffer zones of 20 or 30 meters were adequate.
