EC Proposes to Allow Members to Ban EU-Approved GM Food,Feed Products

The European Commission proposed legislation April 22 that would give European Union member states the right to ban food and animal feed containing ingredients from genetically modified crops, even if those crops have been approved at the EU level. The proposal, which would allow EU members to ban any GM food or animal feed for reasons it deems to be in the "public interest," faces intense opposition from EU food processors, farmers and environmental groups, as well as from the U.S. and other countries exporting GM crops. The European Commission said the proposal, which must be approved by EU member states and the European Parliament, would satisfy concerns of EU citizens opposed to GM crops and would harmonize EU regulatory policies following approval earlier in 2015 of a measure allowing EU states to ban the cultivation of GM crops for reasons other than sound science.
