Russia to Begin Use of Drones to Monitor Environmental Issues in Arctic Region

Russia has said it will begin using aerial drones to monitor environmental issues in its section of the Arctic. A division of Russian Orlan-10 drones deployed in the Chukotka region were to begin monitoring part of Russia's wide expanse of the Arctic as early as May 1, Col. Alexander Gordeev, head of the press service for the Eastern Military District, told the government-owned TASS news agency. Drones can be particularly helpful in studying the Russian Arctic coastline, which is threatened with destruction, said Peter Boyarskiy, chief of the Marine Arctic Geological Expedition. Due to the higher temperatures and ice thinning in the last few decades, parts of the coast where there are no rocks are under the threat of destruction, Boyarskiy told Bloomberg BNA April 30.
