China to Require Garbage Sorting by 2020

China will require garbage-sorting systems to be in place in major cities by 2020, with a goal of collecting and separating 90 percent of residential and institutional trash and recycling 35 percent of it, the government said June 20. Government offices, schools, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, markets, office buildings and food manufac-turers, will have to sort garbage according to various requirements between now and the end of 2020. The order applies to cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. China hopes that garbage sorting can be realized nationally in all cities and rural villages by 2030, the government said. The State Council announcement of the plan is available.
