Poland Enacts Energy Efficiency Law

Polish President Andrzej Duda signed into law June 10 legislation that meets the European Commission directive for all European Union countries to increase energy efficiency by 20 percent by 2020. The law, which takes effect Oct. 1, requires local governments to audit the energy efficiency of industrial enterprises and private and state buildings and recommend ways to modernize industrial plants and power plants, which are 88 percent dependent on coal. They also will recommend ways to improve home insulation. Locales will submit plans of action to the federal government every three years and to the European Commission for approval. "Poland improved its energy efficiency, but it still trails behind the most advanced Western economies," said a statement from the president's office. "The implementation of the EU Directive on Energy Efficiency will help to improve Poland's economic efficiency and increase its competitiveness."
