Compliance Set to Begin July 1 for Parts of China's Updated RoHS 2 Regulation

China's revised regulation on manufacturing and import restrictions on hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products, or China RoHS 2, will require compliance from some companies beginning July 1, while other elements will be phased in, chemical experts told Bloomberg BNA. Aspects of China RoHS 2 effective July 1, with the official start date of the regulation, include new labeling and information disclosure requirements. While these generally follow China's initial RoHS 1 requirements from 2006, many of those regulations were never enforced, Tad Ferris, a partner at the law firm Foley & Lardner in Washington who closely follows China chemical regulation, told Bloomberg BNA. Significantly, the new rules also will set content limits for six substances-cadmium, mercury, lead, hexavalent chromium and their compounds, polybromi-nated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers.
