Climate Change Could Halve Canadian West Coast Aboriginal Fisheries by 2050: Study

The catch from British Columbia aboriginal fishing grounds could decline by nearly half by 2050 as a result of climate change, as some species migrate farther north to cooler water, said a study published Jan. 13 in the scientific journal PLOS ONE. That decline could affect the food and economic security of western Canadian coastal aboriginal people and result in economic losses between C$6.7 million ($4.67 million) and C$12 million ($8.36 million) annually by 2050, according to the study.
