Bid Fails to Derail Stricter EU Controls On Bee-Harming Pesticides

The European Parliament's environment committee June 22 overwhelming rejected a bid by a small group of lawmakers to derail a European Union plan to impose tighter controls on three neonicotinoid pesticides. Use of the substances-clothianidin, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam-has been restricted in the EU since 2013, after the European Food Safety Authority found that they threatened the viability of bee colonies and therefore could put at risk the pollination of crops. The measure prohibits use of the substances in the spraying of, and seed treatments for, cereals and crops that attract bees.
