Seven Ontario First Nations will remain exempt from some provincial hunting and fishing regulations after a bid by outdoors enthusiasts to end their harvesting protections was struck down April 12.The Supreme Court of Canada rejected two appeals from the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters challenging a Canadian policy that grants indigenous communities immunity from some hunting rules on a temporary basis.The dismissals effectively mark the end of the federation's attempt to unravel the policy, which has been in place since 2012 as Canada, Ontario, and the First Nations negotiate a final deal on fishing and hunting rights.The First Nations, which have traditional territory in a region just west of Toronto, can fish and hunt without provincial licenses for personal consumption, social events and ceremonial purposes, according to the Interim Enforcement Policy. Indigenous fishing and hunting rights are protected by the Canada Constitution.
