摘要

The editorial in the last issue of IELR summarised and welcomed the main conclusions of the latest annual World Energy Outlook, released by the International Energy Agency last month (the Report). Its findings chimed with the endless media headlines in recent weeks about how the world is manifestly not on course to meet the Paris Agreement climate goals. We seem to be rushing towards a cliff-edge, a climatic point-of-no-return. Yet, in its "Sustainable Development Scenario", the Report showed what steps are actually within reach to achieve those targets. As the latest round of UN meetings on the climate get underway in Madrid, amid alarming cries of "irreversible tipping point", it might be worth exploring those steps in slightly more detail. They paint a challenging but feasible—and therefore hopeful—picture.~1
