"Shale gas" has leapt resoundingly into the consciousness of both energy professionals and the general public in the last few years, and shows no sign of retreat. This seems somewhat surprising, given that we are just talking about the same old gas held in the same or, at least to the layman, similar layers of rock as regular gas that has been produced for many decades. Perhaps the invention of the word "unconventional" (by a marketing man?) adds some magic. In any event, editor Vivek Bakshi observes that "there will be a need for public perception to be aligned by the industry with the realities of the production of unconventional natural gas resources".
