In a world where the ocean's resources are the frequent source of conflict between nations, the regime of joint development for hydrocarbon resources may offer a reasonable approach for managing such disputes. In the extremely complicated disputes in the South China Sea, for example, international law scholars and commentators have repeatedly recommended the negotiation of joint development arrangements as the most viable solution. This book tracks the origin of the concept and analyses its underlying legal regime, as well as the state practice of joint development. The author, Vasco Becker-Weinberg, has done extensive research on the subject as part of his doctoral dissertation at the University of Hamburg.
