Korean water-pipe ramming

Korean Contractor, Sangshin Construction, was recently faced with the task of installing three water pipes under a busy motorway, as part of a water supply expansion plan for the Seoul Metropolitan Area. Although the water pipes had already been installed up to the embankment of the motorway, there was 34m which still remained to be installed. The decision was made to use a Grundoram pneumatic steel pipe rammer for the job. In order to avoid possible subsidence of the motorway during the planned pipe jacking of the large water pipes, it was decided to use the proven method of pipe roofing and to install 39 steel pipes of a 508mm outer diameter over the total width of the 34m-wide motorway. The steel pipes were interconnected by special profiles over their entire length, thus forming a rigid structure, acting like a roof.
