The Chesapeake Bay Parallel Cross-ing in Virginia, US, is a 27km road/ bridge project being built by a joint venture comprising PCL Civil Constructors, the Hardaway Company, and Inter-beton. The completion date of the $197mil. project is December 1998. Amongst the challenges facing the JV is the driving of a total of 2,417 concrete cylinder piles of 1,350mm diameter with an average length of 41m. To put this in perspective, it is comparable to building a 1.5m-diameter pipeline, 98km long.
