Svedala s construction expertise plays major roles in a new port, one of the most ambitious privatized infrastructure projects in Malaysia, and a second 240,000 vehicles-a-day crosslink bridge between Malaysia and Singapore. The Malaysian state of Johor has been the gateway to the Straits of Malacca, the world's busiest waterway, since the sixteenth century. So crucial was Johor's strategic location that the state was fought over by Portuguese, French and British colonial armies for centuries. After the fall of Malacca to the Portuguese in 1511, Johor rapidly prospered and built up a sizable trading empire throughout Sumatra and the Riau archipelago, controlling the trade in pepper from Siak and tin from South Sumatra.
