Recycling Basic Building Blocks Creates Profitable Activity

Wastes are generated by construction and demolition activity, as well as by the debris created by natural disasters. Processing them into reusable products makes environmental common sense and can be very profitable. Nonrecycled materials have to be disposed of in landfills, and in Japan, Europe, North America and South America, landfill space often is at a premium. Dumping such highly reusable items is not economically feasible because of the high tipping fees involved. For example, in Copenhagen, the cost of disposing construction waste and demolition debris (C&D) in a landfill is $100 per t. In some areas of the world, such materials have even been banned from landfills because of their easy recyclability.
