The on-going Asian financial crisis has hit Thailand particularly hard. International financial and political analysts are currently divided on how or when Thailand will recover. According to one UK analyst the biggest question mark hanging over the country at present is whether it has the political maturity to overcome the crisis. This is something that has also been said of Indonesia. Of all the countries of South East Asia, Thailand is the only nation never to have been colonised by a European power. This, commentators have said, has fostered an inherent tradition of independence and self reliance which may have contributed to the recent downturn.
