A developmentl observed in recent years has been the number of machine manufacturers who have acquired attachment-making companies or expanded their own production facilities for attachments. Caterpillar now calls attachments "work tools". Both descriptions are appropriate ' because these products (such as buckets, breakers, forks, grapples, shears and augers) are attached to carrier machines and they are the tools that give the carrier the versatility that contractors demand. An excavator today does more than excavate. A loader may perform more than loading and carrying tasks.
