The Shard London Bridge or London Bridge Tower in central London, UK, was designed by architect Renzo Piano, and at 310 m, will become the tallest building in Western Europe upon completion in 2012. The UK£ 428 million (US$ 683 million) Shard development will include offices, a hotel, apartments and a 15 storey observatory gallery. Building in a busy area has posed many challenges to contractor Mace. Top-down construction was implemented to save time in the construction of the core. This process has never been used before on a building of this scale and allows the sub- and superstructure to be worked on simultaneously.
