Fragmented it may be, but the international portside grabs market is demonstrably benefiting from sustained high demand, as strong investment feeds through 2006. Intelligence concerning the total grab population is scant. However, the general consensus suggests that globally around 5,000-10,000 units require grab attachments when shoreside and shipboard cranes and unloaders/loaders are tallied up. Sources suggest, however, that the market for grabs in marine applications could amount to ?150m worth of business a year, but such are the variety of attachments included and products handled, that others are wary of placing a firm value on the industry.
