In 2007 in the UK there will be sales of 19 million mobile handsets, of which nine million will have advanced operating systems. In total more than 50 per cent will be able to run video clips - according to Tim Mui, senior analyst, IDC European Mobile Research. There was a time when 3G was seen as the great white hope for mobile entertainment. But before the launch, 3G wasn't popular; press commentators were heaping all of the telecoms industry's woes upon it, and in the hangover from the dot com bust we realised that you cannot remove ￡30 billion worth of value from an industry without causing considerable pain. Yet, as we proceed with these plans some three years on, there seems to be increasing indifference to wider 3G services.
