The broadcast industry is facing challenging times. Revenues are decreasing, competition for advertising is rife, costs are under increasing pressure and with literally thousands of channels of delivery all clamouring for viewers, content is even more than ever King. In short, the industry is growing up and experiencing the same changes that have beset manufacturing industries over the past 30 years. There will always be room for a few specialist workshops that offer a bespoke service (anyone who owns a British sports car over 20 years old relies upon these to keep their pride and joy on the road) but the mainstream manufacturers and suppliers have had to rationalise and deploy technology to improve efficiency and quality. As broadcast moves inexorably into the Digital Age it is becoming increasingly clear that technology has a more important role to play.
