In an increasingly competitive broadcast environment the need to maintain and boost viewer ratings is now a critical driver for business. As a result, the combination of attempts to target new audiences and advances in digital server and compression technology, have seen the proliferation of TV and radio channels experienced in recent years. Although launching additional services on today's digital platforms costs a fraction of what it did 20 years ago, broadcasters remain under pressure to reduce operational expenditure further. This has created a number of specific challenges for broadcasters and service providers. One of these is maintaining the quality of the output of these new and numerous channels. Delivery to the viewer is the basis of all business models in broadcasting. Monitoring is essential if the revenue streams are to be protected effectively. The key is to monitor intelligently and at reasonable cost.
