As the post industry has developed it has created a number of separate tools: graphics, compositing, titling, conforming and so on. These tools frequently come from different suppliers, as the creative principals at each stage choose the most effective device for the job. A project is handed from device to device: not perhaps the most efficient workflow, but it is the way things were always done. With the growth of digital intermediate -film originated material post processed in high-resolution digital form before being returned to film - the pressure has been on to change this workflow. First, it is inefficient, as it depends on one job being completed before the next can be started. Second, there is less compatibility between digital intermediate equipment than video resolution kit, calling for file translation which can be time- consuming. Even moving 2k or 4k digital film files from device to device can be a bottleneck within the facility.
