There are now more distribution channels for broadcasters to use than ever before - a vast array of 'traditional' television channels as well as totally new markets like mobile telephone technology. Populating all these channels is no easy task, and it will naturally fall to the back-catalogue, in many cases, to provide content. This demand has sent many content owners running to the archive to see what value lies locked away in the vaults. To many, what they find is little short of a logistical nightmare - hundreds, thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of programmes stored away on tape - difficult to locate and difficult to access.
