High definition television is bringing substantial changes in the way programmes are made. This is reflected in the differences between programme genres: the interlaced format is preferred for live transmission; progressive has the frame-based appearance of film and appeals more to drama and documentary producers. Less obvious is the division of audio that HD is marking out between live and post-produced material but in some respects it is an even more critical demarcation.
