Taking automation to the enterprise level

Television automation has a history of not much more than 20 years, but it has come a long way in that time. Its first achievement was to make it work at all, to replace operating staff and sneakernet with computer control of a single channel array of master control switcher, router and robot tape library. It was a complex business, often involving commercial breaks being pre-compiled inside the robot, and the automation having to take into account the pre-roll times of VTRs.
