Corrugated Paper was one of the first man made materials to be used exclusively for packaging and was invented and patented around 1871 as a "single face" material principally to be used as a cushioning medium. Mr Albert Jones discovered that by corrugating a piece of paper into a uniform flute formation through two corrugating rollers ,and making this formation rigid by gluing it to another flat piece of paper, the resulting fluted material became a very inexpensive cushioning material. It could be cut and wrapped around delicate objects to provide safe transportation, particularly for glass and pottery. The material was called "single face" because the corrugated paper was glued to just one single flat piece of paper. The flat paper ensured the cushioning ridges of the fluted material were held in place and yet allowed the material itself to remain flexible and so wrap around objects easily. Single face is still in common use today as a protective wrap (See Figure 1).
