The papers have been chosen for the examples they provide concerning the diversity of editorial strategies at the origin of the periodicals, also influencing their subsequent development. They cover the period from the 1680s to the 1780s and a broad geography, centered on German speaking lands with their diverse cultural and political situations, from Germany proper to Bohemia, but also with contributions dealing with comparatively peripheral countries - also broadly belonging to the German cultural area of influence in the Baltic - such as Sweden and Russia. It is noteworthy that in the latter cases the emergence of the scientific and learned journals is part and piece of a larger process of economic, political and technological development, mainly taking place in the 18th century and leading these countries to a place of pride in the European landscape. In fact, the articles by Meise, Oscarsson and Valkova offer valuable information on areas that are comparatively less known by historians of the press and the sciences working outside these countries. The issue of language is crucial in this section.
