The 78 years old Indian Air Force (IAF), with a view to take on the possibility of a multi dimensional threat from across the international borders and take care of Indian assets and interests beyond the shores of the country, has launched a massive modernisation and technology augmentation programme and transform itself into a transcontinental force with resources good enough for quick mobility and rapid intervention. Faced as it is with the twin problems of squadron depletion and obsolescence of equipment, IAF is now on the spree of acquiring helicopters and aircraft of various categories, radars, missiles, air defence systems and a host of other force multipliers.
