Colour Is Good For US

In his adopted home of Senegal, French designer Dominique Petot creates furniture in wonderfully vibrant colours, drawing inspiration from local African craftsmen. Certain countries have a favourable climate for growing fruit or producing wine. What is less widely recognised is that some countries also have a social climate that encourages original design to flourish - such as Senegal. Senegal's ten million inhabitants are considered to be communicative and optimistic, and the country's traditional handicrafts are as bright and colourful as its green, yellow and red national flag - as well as the creations of designer Dominique Petot, who left Paris to settle there, "Whenever I visit Europe, I'm always surprised how little colour is used in furnishings and fashion there," says Petot, "and yet colour is good for us." Petot's special symbiosis with African handicrafts and European design influences does more than mimic the Senegalese motifs which make it so appealing. Visitors to Tendence Lifestyle in Frankfurt had the opportunity to see Petot's work for themselves - in the interior design for Hall 4.1, where the Frenchman, together with a team of Senegalese artists, designed the bars, lounges, cafes and entrance area.
