From Cold War to Cold Peace?

Having just returned from Pugwash's 8th Quinquennial Conference at Lillehammer in Norway my mind is full of nuclear acronyms (IAEA, NPT, NWFZ, CTBT, FMCT, HEU, HLNW, MOX, etc., etc.) and nuclear weapons, so I have decided that proliferation and disarmament should be the subject of this editorial. I have two further excuses for this choice. First, no fewer than three members of our Editorial Board - Joseph Rotblat, Carl Djerassi, and myself - were official delegates at the meeting, and second, Pugwash itself is becoming an interdisciplinary organisation.
