The satellite communications and broadcasting market can be broken down into different segments: fixed satellite services (FSS), direct broadcasting services (DBS), mobile satellite services (MSS), digital audio (Dars or DAB) and the more recent Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (S-DMB) offering mobile video service. Operators' revenues are generated by sales of capacity and added value services. On the eve of the 10th World Summit for Satellite Financing, organised by space and communications consultant Euro-consult, Interavia talked to Euroconsult managing director Pacome Revillon about market prospects. In Revillon's view, there are signs of a return to growth in the FSS segment — after three years of stagnant demand, 2005 saw a 6.2% increase in sales of capacity. This includes the DBS sector (direct-to-home TV broadcasting by integrated operators with their own satellite fleets), though this remains marginal — 290 transponders out of 4,500. This revival has been stimulated by the expansion of standard digital TV, as well as the arrival of High-Definition TV (HDTV), which is now part of the landscape.
