"I have seen the promised land..." is a cry that, over the decades, has spanned from the sublime to the ridiculous. For the former, I think of Martin Luther King's eloquence envisioning a post-racial future. For the latter I think of Lenny Bruce's invocation, in the character of a priest, declaring that the promised land is: Chavez Ravine; and then as the rabbi, to tell us what to do with it: "subdivide."
