I'm a big believer in standards. As we have learned from countless competitions, like Betamax vs. VHS, GSM vs. CDMA, et al., standards can save many years of fruitless commercial activities. When standards do not evolve, as with the past and current situations surrounding operating systems, both for computers and for mobile smartphones and their apps, markets are fractured. Sometimes this works, but usually only for some players and always servicing smaller, fragmented populations.
