The Eisenhower Administration and Psychological Warfare

Over the last decade a wealth of new books have appeared that have highlighted the Eisenhower administration's use of psychological warfare. 2006 was no different. Last year a number of monographs appeared on thernsubject. Below I will deal with three of the most important works published. Two books - Total War and The Truth is Our Weapon - are revised doctoral dissertations. The third book - Failed Illusions - is written by a senior scholar in the field, well acquainted with the vicissitudes of Cold War history. Taken collectively they represent some of the best new work in the field. Not surprisingly, however, their arguments and conclusions are so varied that we are no closer to resolving the underlying historiographical issues that have dominated the scholarship thus far.
