The topic of private security companies (PSCs, also called private military companies) is receiving an increasing amount of generally negative attention in the popular media - dailies, monthlies, documentaries, and online - and academic studies. In this book, Molly Dunigan reviews some of the most commonly-utilized typologies before offering hers to replace them. Of the very large universe of contractors (176,000 Department of Defense [DoD] contractors in the Central Command Area of Responsibility [CENTCOM AOR], compared to 209,000 uniformed personnel), she focuses on that specific group of private security companies whose employees have replaced soldiers in providing security or protection to people and things. The latest figures for this category, cited by DoD in December 2010, are 18,919 in Afghanistan and 8327 in Iraq.
