Intelligence, national security, and foreign policy: a South Asian narrative

This anthology covers an impressive amount of historical and contemporary issues involving national security and intelligence in South Asia. Edited by A.S.M. Ali Ashraf,the book is jointly published by the University of Dhaka's Department of International Relations, and the Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs, an independent research institution. It contains twenty-three chapters that vary in focus from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, but most contributions survey Bangladesh's intelligence community, including the National Security Intelligence, which is the country's largest intelligence body as well as other Bangladeshi agencies members, such as the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence. The chapters by scholars and former government officials throughout South Asia reference a variety of primary and secondary sources, and take different approaches by looking at transnational issues, strictly national concerns or regional cooperation. Given the large number of chapters and the substantive academic focus on Bangladesh's intelligence community, this review will examine select chapters that explore different aspects of Bangladesh's national security and responses to potential threats.
