EU security and justice law: after Lisbon and Stockholm

The Treaty of Lisbon, which entered into force in 2009, and the 2010-2014 Stockholm Programme on justice and home affairs (essentially a plan with guidelines for the development of policies) have made security and justice key areas of legislative growth in the European Union (EU).To discuss the resulting state of EU security and justice law in specific fields, Diego Acosta Arcarazo (University of Bristol) and Cian C. Murphy (King's College London) have brought together an impressive cast of authors to comment on immigration, asylum, counter-terrorism, citizenship, fundamental rights, and external relations. As no one has ever accused the EU to act simply, a guide is required for anyone to make sense of how the EU works and gets anything done. On the broad issue areas of EU security and justice law, Arcarazo and Murphy have edited that guide, which brings up-to-date (as of 1 June 2013) the edited collection of Eckes and Konstadinides.1 However, as EU law is constantly evolving, a new edition will be needed once a successor programme to Stockholm's has been implemented, and that will take into account specific countervailing implementation decisions by EU member states and the control exercised over these decisions by the European Court of Justice (ECJ).
