The idea that one person can be liable for another's wrongdoing is nothing new. While the man on the Clapham omnibus may not have heard of secondary, contributory, or vicarious liability, if the same bus were to run over his foot as he got off at his stop, no doubt the concept of suing the bus company rather than the driver would be very familiar.
