The US Patent and Trademark Office has handed i4i another victory in its US$249m case against Microsoft The USPTO has confirmed that i4i's patent at the centre of the dispute is valid and enforceable. The Canadian firm had originally taken Microsoft to court in 2007, arguing that Microsoft's Word 2003 and 2007 word processing packages had infringed its patent relating to the XML computer programming language. In August 2009, the lower court ruled in i4i's favour, awarding the firm a record US$249m in damages and banning the sale of Word 2007.
