Smurfs hit the big screen

Like the rest of us, many animated characters change over time. They may not wrinkle or grey, but their physiques, clothes, mannerisms, style and image can alter, even subtly, with age (several renditions of Bugs Bunny come to mind). The Smurfs, in their major motion picture return, however, closely maintain the image presented in the Hanna-Barbera cartoon of the late 1970s and early 1980s. A point taken for granted, perhaps, by the millions of cartoon fans, now grown, who took their own children to see the small blue creatures on the big screen in the summer of 2011. But it was a detail on which early negotiations of the movie hinged.
