The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) defines spyware as software that is installed on your computer without your consent, that is used to monitor or control your computer use. It can be used to send a user pop-up ads, redirect a computer to certain Web sites, monitor Web surfing habits, or record keystrokes. Web users are often not aware that spyware has been downloaded to their computers and it can be very difficult to remove.
