Christian Brothers Investment Services is putting its faith in alternative investments. Catholic institutional investors' rising demand for absolute returns led the firm, which manages $4.1 billion for parochial schools, diocesan offices and other Catholic organizations, to introduce a market-neutral, long-short equity fund in September. Los Angeles manager Analytic Investors and Rancho Santa Fe, California-based Freeman Associates Investment Management, which oversee $9 billion and $3.2 billion, respectively, each run half of the $20 million portfolio. Boston's Martingale Asset Management, with $2.6 billion in assets under management, will come aboard when the fund hits $50 million in assets.
