Hedge funds make no bones about being secretive. They're closemouthed about their trading strategies and even more lockjawed about their operations and future plans. So it's surprising when a large hedge fund broadcasts its needs in the pages of the Wall Street Journal. On September 20, Amaranth Advisors, a $7 billion hedge fund based in Greenwich, Connecticut, ran an ad announcing that it was searching for software engineers to help "create and power one of the world's most sophisticated, multiasset trading technology platforms." If that weren't enticement enough, Amaranth offered everyone who attended its "career invitational" at two New York hotels the week of September 26 a free iPod mini digital music player.
