Valentin Chapero Rueda has never been easy to pigeonhole. While pursuing a Ph.D. in medical physics at the University of Heidelberg in the 1980s, he spent as much time acting in and directing student theatrical productions as he did working in the laboratory on a system to map the retina, his dissertation topic. "I have always had a strong inclination toward both creative activities and more precise, analytical ones," says Chapero, chief executive of Swiss hearing aid maker Phonak Group. "They've come together neady in my professional life."
