Winning the Private Equity Game

Citadel Capital is a leading Cairo-based private equity firm in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Established in 2004, Citadel Capital now controls more than $8 billion of investments in oil and gas, mining, cement, agriculture, food production and transportation. Ahmed Heikal, Chairman and Co-Founder, talks to Institutional Investor about the growth of Citadel Capital and the opportunities it creates for the companies in which it invests. Citadel Capital has executed some of the most successful private equity transactions in Egypt and the MENA region. How did such a very young firm achieve this? Citadel Capital may only be four years old but the people behind this company have, over the last ten years, been involved in some of the largest financial institutions in Egypt and all over the world. Prior to Citadel Capital, I was the managing director of EFG-Hermes Holding for eight years. Hisham El-Khazin-dar, who was previously the executive director of investment banking at EFG-Hermes, co-founded this company. Marwan El Araby, who had a long legal career at Shearman & Sterling in New York, joined us as partner, and Ahmed El Houssieny, another partner, is a veteran of Barclays in Egypt.
