Banks don't just shake the world - they run it, according to a trio of physicists who did the math. In a recent paper Ste-fania Vitali and two fellow complex-systems scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich mapped the ownership links among some 43,000 transnational corporations. This exercise claims to reveal a core group of 147 superconnected companies that controls nearly 40 percent of the entire network's economic value. All but one of the top 50 are financial institutions.
