I WAS INTRODUCED TO INSTITU-tional Investor soon afterl joined this side of the industry in late September 2008. Markets were already 20 percent off of their 2007 highs and dropped another 25 percent in the two weeks I sat in new-hire training. Before 2008,I knew nothing about institutions or the unique issues they faced. My first Ⅱ experience came a few months later, in early 2009, after my mentor mentioned securities lending. My response -'What the heck is securities lending?' -led to a printed-out (possibly photocopied) Ⅱ article on the subject mysteriously landing on my desk. Ⅱ was a godsend in helping me cut through the noise early on, and has been an important touchpoint on trends in institutional investing in the years since.
