The 11th Engineering Assembly was held at Exeter University over two days 17,18 July 1995 and the theme was 'Increasing Stakeholder Participation in the Engineering Profession'. The guest speaker was Dr David Evans, Head of Technology and Innovation, DTI who summarised the present status of 'Action for Engineering' which aims, through co-ordinated action, to increase substantially the influence, involvement and achievements of professional engineers and technicians for the benefit of British industry. The President of the Board of Trade, Michael Heseltine, launched on 5 October 1994 a steering group and five task forces to encourage UK companies to harness engineering skills and improve the understanding of engineering's contribution to wealth creation. 820-821 1. promotion of engineering careers in schools; 2. making better use of engineers; 3. training more technicians and supervisors; 4. A. the formation of engineers-structure and standards; B. excellence in graduate and postgraduate engineering education; and 5. importance of technology; and are due to report in 1996. Mr Suresh Khanna, Head Engineering Policy Section, DTI is the Secretary of the Steering Group. This report will have an important impact on the future of the Engineering Council.
